The phrase that is running through my head this morning is “the water of life:” the promise of heavenly nourishment to quench the thirst of the soul. We are familiar with Jesus’ promise that rivers of living water will flow from within the hearts of those who believe in Him.’ (John 7:38)

Most of us are only too familiar too, though, with the many times when rash and unedifying words have tumbled out of our mouths. Nothing can take those words back, and the hurt they have caused, but we can always pray for the water of His risen life to flow to cleanse the debris that has built up in our hearts, or that we have scattered around the alluvial plains around us.

At this time when we are so conscious of the world’s increasing need for water supplies, and even in our own country, as data centres and other industrial plants make ever-growing demands on our water supplies, let’s remember to pray for everything to do with vital matter of water management, here at home and abroad.

But let’s also be praying for a pure and limpid flow to cleanse not only our own polluted stream, but to refresh others who have suffered when our banks have overflooded, and we have ‘inundated’ others.

As particular examples come to mind, be Lord of where these puddles of rancid water have spread, Lord. Stem and reverse those streams, Lord, and make more room for Your water of life to flow sweet and true again through our hearts. Let there be far more fresh water than salt water that flows from the spring of our mouths, which are themselves filled from what is in our hearts. (James 3:9-12 and Matthew 15:17-20).

Yes, Jesus, let the water of life flow freely, not only through our hearts but out to reach the hearts of those attending youth camps and conferences this summer.
