I love it when I spot the Lord’s hand at work in every day matters. A few days ago, totally randomly, my phone suddenly started playing a familiar and exquisite piece of music that we recorded some years ago: ‘Autumn’ from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Well, we are certainly well into the season of mists, mellow fruitfulness and exquisite colours,’ and there is something in the piece (and in Francis’ Cummings beautiful rendition of it) that speaks to the suffering so many are currently enduring as they cope with lockdowns, unalleviated stress, grief and sickness.
And so we offer this rich piece of music, played for us by Francis Cummings, who then leads the players on into a time of improvisation on behalf of those who are suffering as a result of Covid-19 and the lockdown. Although it is short (you can always play it again!) we hope it will help to give expression to whatever griefs and emotions you may be carrying at this time and turn them all into prayer.
As the Prayer Book has it, ‘we most humbly beseech Thee of Thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all them, who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.’
