You whose beauty is past change, father forth a people for Your own possession.

Sunset over Barcelona

A prayer concerning Catalonia’s push for independence . . . with acknowledgements to Gerard Manley Hopkins

Father God, we cry to You in all the debate now raging, let there be a proper engaging!

Guide, govern and direct the process now unfurling and turn the hearts of both Spaniards and Catalans alike. Yes guide guard and restrain,
lest some strong surge flare up to impair the gift and calling You are preparing for these peoples.

Let many look to You for ultimate supremacy rather than pinning their hopes on external and issues, and ever more stridently denouncing the stance that others take. For neicther side can ever be supremely right, and You will be working both ends.

Warrior Prince, rise with healing in Your wings. Shine in gentleness and power upon this sun-baked land. Let love be known and ancient prejudice and strongholds be broken down – and multitudes lift their hearts in praise to the King of Kings.

Bright light, at this time when decentralising policies are seeking to draw many away from Castilian control we pray for all the provinces: Madrid and Castile, Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia, Aragon, Andalusia, Murcia, Navarre, the Basque provinces, the Canary Islands, the Balearic islands, Extremadura, and Valencia.

Let the name of Jesus be lifted high across the land, and your light come flooding in to heal the scars that mar the residue of the flawed and violent past. Restrain proud ambitions and scatter powers that are seeking to inflict great harm, so that Spain and Catalonia alike can experience the fullness of all You intend them now to be.

To paraphrase Gerard Manley Hopkin’s beautiful words, “You whose beauty is past change, father forth” a people for Your own possession. In Jesus’ ncame, Amen.
