The vital contribution that women make to the Ukrainian military

Daughters of Ukraine: Women on the Front Line

Even in the midst of appalling loss and suffering, Ukrainian believers are still continuing to worship the Lord. For example, I came across this clip ofpeople who had had their homes bombed out worshipping. (The clip is on Facebook, for those who have it.)

I was watching Japanese television the other day, and chanced upon a remarkable program about the vital contribution that women are making on the frontline to the armed forces of Ukraine. Over 65,000 women now serve in the Ukrainian military. That is a massive mobilisation!

The documentary follows the story of various women on the front line over an extended period of time, giving deep insight into their lives, vividly revealing the reality of the horrendously costly war with their own emotional life, as well as their personal circumstances back home. It is exceptionally moving.

Unrotated, unrelieved and facing relentless pressure, this is the front line against Putin’s war against the West as Ukraine struggles not to lose more ground against their numerically vastly superior enemy.

When I hear Pete Hegseth, the Defence Minister of the United States, speaking disparagingly against ‘weaker’ women in the armed forces, he would do better to listen to what Ukrainian commanders have to say: they know that it is the women who are holding their morale better than the men, 30,000 of whom have been indicted for deserting their posts.

If ever there is a film to bring the reality home to western societies, which are still for the most part thinking in conventional social and civilian terms, this is surely it. Although you will hear people saying, “I go with God,” it is by no means a religious programme. Neither does it portray the victory of love over hatred in this conflict: rather, it graphically and emotively portrays the extreme suffering that is afflicting millions. I think you will find it deeply moving. As always, focusing on a few helps us to identify in prayer with the many.

The Kremlin is making tremendous efforts to influence and subvert nations to its cause, spewing out dark clouds of hatred and propaganda. Moldova managed to elect a pro-EU party, but billionaire Andrej Babis won the popular vote in the Czech Republic and has said that he will cut off vital military supplies to Ukraine, joining with Slovakia and Hungary in this.

The Russians are enjoying great success in their massive campaigns to push countries such as Georgia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and now the Czech Republic into choosing between being either pro-Putin and isolation. Even in the West, Russia is having an ever greater impact in its attempts to influence elections – not to mention being behind many vicious cyberattacks in Germany, France, Britain and elsewhere.

How right Zelensky was when he said that the West would actually find it a lot cheaper to dig deep now and support Ukraine, because it is fighting for the freedom of Europe. Scrambling to defend ourselves later will be too late – Russia is expected to have recovered its losses and be ready to launch a war against the rest of Europe by 2030 according to British defence sources.

Unless, unless, unless God intervenes!

Russia Targets Locomotives to Cripple Ukraine’s Supply Lines
On several occasions over the last three years, we have specifically asked prayer for the brave train drivers in Ukraine who ferry soldiers to the front, and the wounded back again. People like them are those who undergird a modern state and an effective fighting force. Russia knows this, and has begun to aim at locomotive depots – and just as it is always easier to hit an aircraft that is in its hanger on the ground rather than one that is flying fast through the skies, there is great danger here. In addition, for the third year running, the Russians are making intensive efforts to knock out Ukrainian communication networks and energy supplies, as the hard Ukrainian winter approaches.

Father, let your angels stand sentinel over the skies over Ukraine tonight we pray. Give supernatural discernment to those tracking the drones to recognize harmless decoy drones, so as not to lose time and precious resources better used to counter real threats.

Lord, we are asking You to do more and achieve more than the anti-aircraft gunners and defenders of themselves could do. Even as You defended Britain miraculously at more or less this time of year in 1940 so guard the skies over Ukraine we pray. Let there be one miraculous ‘coincidence’ after another that gets people safely out of the target zones of places that are about to be bombed.
