The Sound of Hope: Music to help us pray for America, Russia and Ukraine

Feb 22, 2024 | LISTEN, PRAY

I wanted to offer some representative pieces of music to help us pray for America, Russia and Ukraine. The latter two were an easy choice, but as I couldn’t find anything in our library stock that seemed right for America, I thought instead to offer this Welsh hymn, both in honour of the two million Welsh immigrants who made their home in America, (especially in New England, the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama) but also as representative of the multitude of nations that have combined to make America the nation that it is today. (Look up the article in Wikipedia on ‘Welsh Americans’ for more information.

The title of the hymn Calon Lân, (which means a pure heart) feels a particularly pertinent and poignant thing to pray for America at this time. The hymn tune is very well known from its many sporting associations, but its words are almost completely unknown in their English translation.

As the heart-shocking crump of artillery shells and bombs and the wailing shriek of air raid sirens fill the skies over Ukraine, there is profound grief and loss, with virtually every family now affected.

May the Lord grant supernatural resilience, hope, and the deliverance they desperately need at this time when their troops are exhausted, and their morale has taken many severe knocks as they struggle in the face of overwhelming odds.

Let’s pray along with this exquisite Kyrie from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and pray for the light of God to shine into their darkness.

Russia has long been in the news for all the wrong reasons, but let’s carry in our hearts the glorious prospect the Lord showed Hudson Taylor, the celebrated pioneer missionary to China. It is available on many websites; this one is taken from God Encounter Ministries.

While on a ministry furlough in England, Hudson Taylor suddenly stopped in the middle of a sermon and for a few moments stood speechless with his eyes closed. Finally, he explained to his audience:

I have seen a vision. I saw in this vision a great war that will encompass the whole world. I saw this war recess and then start again, actually being two wars. After this, I saw much unrest and revolts that will affect many nations. I saw in some places spiritual awakenings. In Russia I saw there will come a general, all-encompassing, national, spiritual awakening, so great that there could never be another like it. From Russia I saw the awakening spread to many European countries, and then I saw an all-out awakening followed by the coming of Christ.

As Tim Finch prayed, ‘Lord, You know how this conflict with Ukraine will end. I believe You will eventually rescue Russia and the Russian people from men with grossly inflated egos, who have become the homes of the enemy of God. I believe (and pray) that what we are seeing now are the signs of this, and we pray and for the outworking of Your God’s true plans for the Russian people and the Church in that land – Orthodox, Catholic, Pentecostal and Independent alike’.

Yes, Lord, may a true spiritual awakening come to Russia and encompass Europe just as the great pioneer missionary Hudson Taylor saw. Even as the vision was accurate concerning the two world wars, may the vision be true concerning the following great awakening!

Notwithstanding, let’s pray for the Spirit of the Lord to groan for peace for Russia, for the time when it will be free and when many issue forth from that country not to conquer but to bear witness to the light of Christ. This is a powerful piece to help us do that.

Jesus warned that His ministry would by no means bring peace on Earth in this dispensation, But Jesus’ ministry of peace-making was all in terms of reconciling people to God – and He was more than prepared to call out people such as Herod (that fox!) and the Pharisees for being hypocrites. That is not the way to win peace, of it owes nothing to the ‘peacekeeping’ that is nothing more than appeasing in the flesh. Rather it would provoke hostility even within families. Even so, He who is the Prince Peace and the ultimate peace keeper and peace maker, was yet seeking to reconcile all who will humble themselves and turn to Him and to His Father. So let’s pray ‘Your Spirit groans for peace’ for Russia, and also with this by Rachmaninov.
