The Still Small Voice

The Power of Discernment: Peace - the umpire

Chapter Six, Part Three

The peace that Christ gives is to guide you in the decisions you make;
for it is to this peace that God has called you together in the one body.
(Colossians 3:15)

Peace – the Umpire

The peace that Christ gives is to guide you in the decisions you make;
for it is to this peace that God has called you together in the one body.
(Colossians 3:15)

The sheer variety of choices we face in life can be so baffling that prioritizing competing calls on our time and energies is a major part of our challenge to live in the spirit of discernment. Even in such everyday matters as toggling between myriad television channels, shopping online and venturing far afield to visit or to vacation, we recognise that we need to seek the Lord concering the pleasures as well as the challenges of life. May we not permit the Still Small Voice, that leads us always to God’s highest priorities, not get drowned out as we give ourselves to either work of pleasure.

‘In Me you may have peace,’ promised Jesus – and the whole of His life demonstrated this extraordinary ability to be at one with His Father, even in the midst of endless demands and jostling crowds. To help us evaluate the choices we face, therefore, it is so important to be on the watch to see and sense where the peace of God is leading us, when it is being opposed – but also and where it is simply not there, because we are straying from God’s best course.

For Reflection and Prayer

Lord of Peace,
make us quick to spot where Your peace is leading –
and rightly uneasy when we are in danger of going astray.

Thank You for all the ways by which You have led us in the past;
We give You now all the ‘leads and leadings’ that that we are doing our best to follow . . .

Guide and overrule anything we have got out of balance:
bless and anoint all that truly is of You,
this and every day.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
