Promises of God Part 4 – I will give you a new name

Dec 13, 2012 | Promises of God

I will also give to each one a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.
Revelation 2:17

Promises of God part four

Used as we are to considering rewards in worldly terms – bonuses, salary increases, cars with higher spec – manna may not at first sight have seemed a very exciting reward until we looked a bit deeper. And the same is probably true of the white stones that we are promised here. What do they signify? ’Signify’ is a great word to use for the book of Revelation. Almost every vision and description is a symbol of some heavenly truth.

In ancient times, white stones symbolised special days, rather as we might speak today of ‘red letter’ days. These stones also serve as admission tickets. Jesus is inviting us to His Heavenly banquet, and we are looking forward to the greatest gathering ever.

That’s why we want to respond well to His call now. The more traces there are of complaining and resentment and other such lurkings in our heart, the harder it is for the Lord to do all He longs to do through us. May He rather see gratitude and childlike acceptance in us, so that He can give us a name that will perfectly express all that He sees of our secret endeavour – a name that exquisitely sums up all that He has been to us, and all that we have been to Him.

What greater honour could He do for us? Even now the Bridegroom is quietly coining this new name for us – a name that will speak forever of His love and our hidden struggles and aspirations, and which He will bestow on His Bride as He greets us. How sad it would be if we were to receive some lesser name simply because we lacked the faith and patience to endure!

Might the Lord perhaps be prepared to share some hint of this new name with you now by showing you some expression of His particular love for you, as well as providing an antidote to whatever weakness or sense of rejection you may have grown used to living with.

Perhaps He’s willing to confer some name or epithet on someone who is dear to you, as you lift them to Him, either now or when you are with them. What name would He inspire you to pass on? The fact that they are beautiful in His sight? Or one who gives encouragement? A bringer of peace, perhaps – or a songbird who makes beautiful music in the house of the Lord? May the Lord drop some such name now into your spirit so that you can receive encouragement yourself, as well as bless others on their pilgrimage.

I Jesus have sent My angel to testify to you about these things. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star. And the Spirit and the Bride say “Come.” Let the thirsty ones come – anyone who desires to. Let them come and drink of the water of life without charge

To all who are victorious, who obey Me to the very end, I will give authority over the nations, the very same authority that I received from my Father, along with the morning star – my very own presence and power.

Revelation 2:26-28; 22:16
